Get Started with Digital Command Control and SimpleDCC

Digital Command Control (DCC) allows you to control model trains and accessories such as signals, level crossings, and more. To use DCC on your layout or track, you need two components:

  • A DCC command station that powers the track and sends commands to trains and accessories
  • A train with a DCC decoder and/or an accessory, such as a signal, with a DCC decoder

SimpleDCC is a system that adds Digital Command Control to your track or layout. It can be used with any DCC decoder, as well as DC trains and even battery-powered trains and vehicles.

SimpleDCC also has many useful features that other DCC systems don't have, such as the ability to send messages wirelessly in both directions between the command station and decoders.

Getting Started with SimpleDCC

Setup

We assume that you already have a train with a DCC decoder or a DCC-based layout.

To control your layout with SimpleDCC, you need a SimpleDCC command station. You can assemble one yourself (see the hardware setup guide for more information) or buy one at simpledcc.com.

If you bought a command station from simpledcc.com, simply unpack it and connect it to power. If you built the command station yourself, you need to upload the firmware and configure the GPIO pins connected to the motor driver (see the firmware setup guide for more information).

Control Your First Train

  • Connect the SimpleDCC command station to the track and power it on. The polarity of the connection between the command station and the track does not matter.
  • On any modern device, such as a mobile phone, tablet, or computer, open the Wi-Fi settings and connect to the SimpleDCC network.
  • Open http://simpledcc.local in a web browser.
  • Open Editor.
  • Click + Decoder. Enter the train name and decoder address. If you don't know the decoder address, click Auto-detect to help find it. Then click Add.
  • You will see a web throttle that you can use to control the train. Try moving the train to make sure everything works correctly.
  • Repeat these steps to add other elements of your layout.
